Where no airfields exist

Oulu-Suomussalmi-Posio-Oulu 3.8.2014

On Sunday, 3.8.2014 we took off once again from our sea plane base at the Martinhovi Shore and flew our STOL 701 to Suomussalmi, close to the Russian border.
My co-pilot, Niklas, visited his grandparents and stayed there while I continued north to Posio to visit the Lake Livojärvi.
Lake Livojärvi is a Fabulous place with miles of soft sand and beaches. Crystal clear warm water, what a place to stop for a swim in a day like this.

On The Way to Unknown
On the way to unknown… Never flown this route before and no idea of the landing spots…

The further north you get the less flat is the landscape… This hilltop is part of the Syöte National Park. The hill is called ”Pyhitys” and its the highest top in the park area reaching up to 422m ASL

After about one hour of flying - Lake Livojärvi ahead, behind; Lake Kitkajärvi and in the horizon the Fell Riisitunturi.

Posio City
10 minutes further north is the Posio village, a gas station is located on the shore with a small beach to land for refuel.

Evening trip to Sand Bank 2.8.2014

Sand Bank is a sand bank :) in the Gulf of Bothnia located approximately 20km west from our sea plane base. It’s only about 10 minutes flight so it’s easy to reach. Great place for swimming and camping.
Surrounded by nothing but sea apart from a few stones access is only possible when the sea is calm enough. I’ve always approached the sand bank from northern side as do all the boats too but from the air it seems possible to approach also from the southern side if the water is high enough. We do not have the tide here but the wind actually makes water to go up or down surprisingly much.

Enjoy the photos!

Lake Aittojärvi 26.7.2014

On Saturday, 26 July 2014 we packed our gear in the Zenair and headed for Lake Aittojärvi close to the eastern border. With some tailwinds it took 1h 25min to get there.
First thing to do was to cook some sausages on the open fire and then fishing! We had to return on Sunday morning. With not so lucky with the winds the return flight took 1h 45min.

JAWS! You would not like to have those jaws biting you! Naked swimming not recommended for males, you know ;)
Although rare, pikes actually may attack people hanging their fingers or toes in the water.

We have own natural well - spring water bubbling from the ground. Super cool and perfectly clear, ready-to-drink. No need to haul tap water from the village. We also used the water to keep the fish cool over the night.

After the fishing it was time to warm up the Sauna and enjoy the smooth steam (”löyly”) of the log sauna. You cannot really compare the urban city-saunas to the real log sauna on a forest lake. Its a different world :)

Typical landscape in the Oulu region, flat country with lakes and forests surrounded by swamps

On our way back we spotted a small forest fire. The fire plane was already there.

Trip to Suomussalmi 18.7.2014

Finally back in business! The 701 was put on floats on Wednesday the 16th of July and on Friday I took it to a cross country flight to Suomussalmi and landed on Lake Kiantajärvi.
Its about 180km flight but I did not quite follow the direct route :)

Ready to go

But first some fun in the Lake!

Suomussalmi, a small but nice village close to the Russian border.
Suomussalmi is still best known for the Winter War in 1939.

A trip to Hailuoto, EFHL

Hailuoto is an island in the Gulf of Bothnia, approximately 30km west of the city of Oulu. It has a small but nice airfield, EFHL.
The runway is currently closed but we have a special permission from the airfield chief to operate temporarily at own risk.

According to the latest information, the airfield will be re-opened in the near future after some construction work.

For the STOL CH701 its a perfect spot to visit!
